Getting Oglethorpe County Court Records
Gather the basics before you call. Have the court, the case number or date range, and the document title ready. Know which copy product you need, too. For Superior and Juvenile files, contact the Clerk of Superior Court at 111 West Main Street, Lexington, GA 30648. You can also mail P.O. Box 68. The phone number is 706-743-5731 and the fax is 706-743-5335. Weekday counter hours run 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Magistrate and Probate records sit in separate offices at 109 East Boggs Street. Magistrate answers at 706-743-8321. Probate answers at 706-743-5350. City ordinance and traffic matters begin with the issuing city. For online docket search options, try the county Case Search, the Georgia E-Access provider directory, PeachCourt where account access applies, or posted calendars. The offices publish no public terminal, email-delivery rule, same-day service, or universal payment list. Confirm those details directly.
- Name the exact court and file.
- State the case number or a narrow date range.
- Name each pleading, order, or docket sought.
- Choose plain, certified, or exemplified copies.
- Ask for cost and delivery estimates before payment.
Three Oglethorpe Record Products
A docket is the procedural index of a case. It can show the case number, the events, the settings, and the status. A filed document is different. It is the complaint, indictment, motion, order, plea, or judgment sitting behind an entry. A certified copy is a reproduction the clerk authenticates. No casual picture of a calendar can match it.
- Docket
- The dated index of activity in a court case.
- Filed document
- The actual paper or scanned image accepted into the file.
- Certified copy
- A clerk-authenticated reproduction used when formal proof is required.
- Exemplified copy
- A higher form of authentication that should be requested only when the recipient requires it.
Name the product you want. A vague request for "the record" may return a docket printout, while the receiving office actually needs the signed order.
Court Record Types
The Superior Clerk splits its work between divisions. The Civil Division handles filings, scanning, appeals, calendars, cost bills, and adoption-docket work. The Criminal Division keeps misdemeanor and felony pleadings, citations, indictments, warrants, bond forfeitures, and presentments. Oglethorpe County court records also cover service returns, domestic standing orders, disposition forms, and appeal records.
Magistrate Court holds small claims up to $15,000, plus dispossessory, garnishment, warrant, limited misdemeanor, and county ordinance matters. Probate Court maintains wills, estates, guardianships, conservatorships, licenses, and involuntary-treatment records. Juvenile files follow separate confidentiality law. City courts keep their own ordinance or traffic files where they operate. One caution: a land index or vital record is not automatically part of a court case file. The elected clerk manages several record classes, after all.
What Scanned Means in Oglethorpe
The clerk's Court Info page states that civil proceedings and court pleadings are scanned. Superior criminal materials are included. That supports retention and retrieval. It does not prove every image is open without an account, free to download, or clear of redaction.
PeachCourt is linked for civil filing and document access. EZ Criminal e-Filing is a filing route. GSCCCA eCertification handles a separate certification workflow. If the county Case Search link will not load, call the clerk. Ask whether an older file is scanned. Ask whether the image can be sent, and whether its public portion must be reviewed first.
Inside an Oglethorpe Court Record
Contents vary by court and case type. Think of the docket as the map and the file as the evidence behind each entry. Posted calendars confirm only a smaller set of fields, and they can change after publication.
| Caption and number | Identify the parties, court, and file. |
|---|---|
| Filing date and status | Place the matter in its procedural stage. |
| Register entries | List accepted filings, orders, notices, and settings by date. |
| Pleadings and orders | Provide the text behind a docket description when public. |
| Service and hearing data | May show returns, dates, judge, and setting type. |
| Disposition and costs | May state the result and financial entries recorded by the court. |
No single Oglethorpe County court record shows every field. A clerk can point you to the public document that answers the request, without creating a new report.
Georgia Request Form Fields
The Attorney General's Open Records request instructions direct each request to the office holding the records. You can ask orally. A written request, though, builds a clearer record if timing or enforcement ever matters.

The state template asks for a date, recipient and address, fax, email, and description. It also wants the submitter name and contact details. It has no required ID field, payment control, certification selector, or promised turnaround. Oglethorpe County publishes no local rule mandating this exact form. Georgia's official Open Government law overview supplies the legal starting point.

Court orders and court-specific rules can still limit a file. If the complete record cannot be released, ask for any non-exempt portion.
Fees and Certified Copies
The clerk's posted Superior Court cost schedule, dated July 2024, lists specific copy products. Those figures say nothing about Magistrate, Probate, city, provider, or federal fees. Confirm the product and total with the office that holds the record.
| Superior Clerk product | Posted amount |
|---|---|
| Certified or exemplified copy | First page $2.50; each added page $0.50 |
| Uncertified, no clerk help | $0.50 per page |
| Uncertified, clerk help | $1.00 per page |
| Computer printout | $2.50 per page |
| Fax or electronic copy | First page $2.50; each added page $1.00 |
| Appeal record preparation | $1.00 per page |
A separate seal or certification row lists $2.00. Because the schedule also carries certification and exemplification page charges, describe your intended use and request a written quote.
Oglethorpe eCertification Lookup
GSCCCA eCertification serves authenticated digital products. Its landing page offers an Authentication Code field and a Lookup button for an existing item. Starting a new request takes a GSCCCA universal account, plus participation by the county. Keep the code that comes with the certified document so the recipient can validate it.
Certification never expands public access. The clerk still decides whether the source record can be released. If the recipient only needs a readable copy, an uncertified image may cost less. If it demands a certified or exemplified copy, use those exact words. Confirm whether authentication applies per page or per document.
Sealed Records and Public Access
Georgia's open-records baseline sits in O.C.G.A. 50-18-70 and O.C.G.A. 50-18-71. Together they set response duties, fees, electronic access, and the no-new-report rule. Court files follow a separate framework. Uniform Superior Court Rule 21 opens court records to the public. Rules 21.1 through 21.6 cover limits and review. They add protected identifiers and sealed pages. When you write the clerk, keep the ask narrow. A tight request lets the clerk split what is public from what the law protects.
Juvenile, sealed, family-violence, and protected-identifier material may be withheld or redacted. A missing online result is not an access ruling.
The official Open Government FAQ addresses requests, fees, and agency duties.

If the clerk denies access in writing, the denial should cite its legal authority. A Rule 21 request and a standard open-records request to an agency are separate procedures, so treat them as such.
Federal Court Records Beyond Oglethorpe
Federal case files never sit with the Oglethorpe County clerk. For federal district routing, Oglethorpe County falls inside the Northern District of Georgia. PACER is the official federal docket index. The CourtListener RECAP service can help you find a free federal copy. RECAP relies on contributed documents and opinions. Coverage is spotty by design.

Treat RECAP as a convenience, never the official source. Confirm the federal venue and the controlling record through the federal clerk or PACER itself. Copy fees set by state Superior Court do not transfer to federal documents. The Northern District courthouse handling these matters sits in Gainesville. It is not in Oglethorpe County. Bankruptcy runs through its own federal clerk and the CM/ECF docket. A county clerk cannot certify a federal filing. A federal office cannot authenticate a county court order. Sort out venue and custody before you pay for any search or formal copy.
